L. W. de Laurence’s The Great Book of Magical Art, Hindu Magic and Indian Occultism is one of the most characteristic large-format occult compilations issued by the De Laurence Company of Chicago.
The work is essentially a massive compendium of Western ceremonial magic presented under an “Oriental” frame. Despite the title, it is not primarily a serious treatment of Hindu magical traditions. Much of the material derives from European occult sources: ceremonial magic, Cabala/Qabalah, talismanic practice, astrology, alchemy, spiritism, magical medicine, vampirism, witchcraft, and related subjects. Later dealer descriptions explicitly note that substantial portions draw from figures such as Francis Barrett and Agrippa, among others.
