A rare handwritten Arabic magical talisman on laid paper, probably dating to the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. Written in bold black ink, the text invokes God through traditional Islamic formulas before appealing to the authority granted to the Prophet Solomon (Sulaymān) over the jinn, devils, and their kings. The manuscript includes esoteric letterist notation and magical stroke formulas characteristic of the Islamic sciences of letters (ʿilm al-ḥurūf). Such talismans were created as practical ritual objects for protection, spiritual authority, and defense against unseen beings. The sheet retains clear evidence of having been folded for carrying as a personal amulet and survives in remarkably complete condition. Photos show both sides of single sheet, 4 3/8" x 3 1/4".
