Cornelius Agrippa: Occult Philosopher, first published in London by William Rider & Son in 1921, is a short biographical and interpretive study of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486–1535), one of the central figures of Renaissance occult philosophy. It is not a full scholarly biography so much as a compact occultist portrait.
Spence treats Agrippa primarily as a magician, occult philosopher, and esoteric thinker, rather than chiefly as a Renaissance humanist, legal scholar, physician, theologian, or political operator. That reflects the book’s period and publisher. William Rider & Son was one of the major British publishers of occult and psychical-research literature in the early twentieth century, so the intended readership was already interested in magic, mysticism, Rosicrucianism, spiritualism, and related subjects.
